Malawi

Flag of MalawiBASICS significantly expanded its technical assistance program in Malawi in October 2007, when the project began a three-year technical assistance agreement with the Ministry of Health to improve the effectiveness, quality, and accessibility of child health services.  These objectives are being directly achieved by supporting implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Accelerated Child Survival and Development in Malawi, strengthening community-based malaria interventions through mobilization of local NGOs, and building capacity for the prevention and treatment of pediatric HIV/AIDS. Of twenty-eight districts in Malawi, the program targets the eight districts with the highest rates of child mortality and morbidity. These include Balaka, Chikwawa, Kasungu, Mangochi, Phalombe, Nsanje, Salima and Zomba; comprising thirty percent of the country’s population of children under the age of five.

The agreement with the Ministry of Health builds on assistance BASICS has been providing since 2006 to support expansion of Malawi's national program for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), as well as other aspects of pediatric HIV/AIDS programming, including helping Malawi reach its PEPFAR targets for infants and children.
