Madagascar

Flag of MadagascarThe main element of BASICS' technical assistance program in Madagascar is support for the introduction of zinc for treating diarrhea. The initiative represents a key opportunity to revitalize the control of diarrheal diseases in the country, focusing particularly on case management (i.e., care-seeking, access to services, and product availability). Zinc efforts are also providing a point-of-entry for support to improve integrated community case management of pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. At the central level of the Malagasy health system, BASICS is collaborating with RPM Plus, UNICEF, SanteNet (Chemonics), and other partners to build capacity in various departments of the Ministry of Health, training institutions, and nongovernmental organizations. Similarities in Senegal and DR Congo have made BASICS' experiences in those countries particularly useful in addressing programming needs in Madagascar.
